Welcome to Borovets
Rila is the mountain with pure-clean lakes, where the springs of some of the deepest and longest rivers in Bulgaria are. There, at the foot of Mussala peak 2925m - the highest one on the Balkan Peninsula huddles Borovets resort. Its name come form the Bulgarian word for “bor”, which stands for pine tree – old aged pine woods cover the place. Borovets was established in 1896 by King Ferdinand. Delighted by the vivid area and the mountainous crystal – clear air, he decided to situate there his summer residence.
Today Borovets is the biggest and oldest mountain resort in Bulgaria, situated at 1350 m above the sea level. It is also a modern all year round resort, with luxurious hotels, restaurants that offer international and traditional Bulgarian cuisine, bars where world-famous Bulgarian wines can be tasted, night clubs and discos. Settled 42 miles away from the capital of Bulgaria – Sofia, and 66 miles away from Plovdiv - the second largest city in the country, Borovets is easily accessible and it is preferred place for holidays, tourism and sports. The climate is moderate and mild, and winter is very snowy. The average temperature in January (the coldest month of the year) is about 4.8C. The ski season usually spans from mid-December till April.
The resort provides excellent conditions for winter sports; there a range of ski runs with various length and difficulty, suitable not only for skiing, but also for snowboarding, ski jumping, biathlon, night skiing. The marked ski runs for alpine skiing have total length of 45 km, and are 6 m wide. They are projected according to the requirements of the World Ski Federation. New ski runs and facilities are under construction. The resort hosted twice World Cup Skiing rounds and the biathlon track is one of the best in the world. Visitors who do not ski can enjoy organized trips to picturesque spots on the Rila Mountain like the Seven Rila Lakes, the famous Rila Monastery, Mussala peak, etc. They may also go riding or fishing, or visit King Ferdinand’s Residence in Borovets.
The Super Borovets project is going to be implemented in the next few years. The resort is expected to be developed as a holiday village with a modern infrastructure, offering a rich variety of services, sports, and entertainments. Borovets will become the largest winter resort on the Balkans.
